Vegas Top 30 Poll and Jimmer the Super Hero

Though it carries no weight, it’s fun to see the Las Vegas oddsmakers Top 30 College Football Poll. As I mentioned last week when I posted it, this poll might actually be the most accurate. Despite a close call against San Diego State, TCU remains #1. As well, the poll has Boise State moved up to #2.

From the grid-iron to the hard wood –

Hoops season is getting underway. BYU played a very entertaining game last night against Utah State in Provo. The Cougars came out on top 78-72, avenging one of only 4 losses from last year. About 17,000 on hand for the game at the Marriott Center. Not a sell-out but not bad for a November contest. Colorado State probably didn’t even have 17,000 fans on hand when they played BYU in football this past Saturday.

We all know about Jimmer Fredette and what a force he is. BYU finally got the monkey off their back by winning a first round tournament game last year. If BYU is ever going to make a Sweet 16 – Elite 8 run, this would be the year. Fredette is in my opinion, a once in a generation talent. He’s just that good a college basketball player. It will be fun to see if he can lead the Cougars past several talented teams in-conference and land the Cougars a high enough NCAA Tournament seed to do some damage.

In the mean time, Fredette is receiving a lot of well deserved pre-season attention. Check out this Sports Illustrated cover story of Jimmer the Hoopes Hero: http://www.byucougars.com/Filing.jsp?ID=14697

Finally, here’s a link to a preview of Mountain West Basketball this year. The same names you might expect will challenge once again for the conference title and NCAA tournament births – BYU, New Mexico, UNLV and San Diego State.

In addition to BYU’s nice win last night over Utah State, don’t forget that San Diego State just knocked off #12 Gonzaga in Spokane on Tuesday night. Could be a great season of Mountain West Basketball.
